Revitalizing History: Star Elevator’s Modernization of the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

We are thrilled to share our journey in modernizing the elevators at the iconic Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, a historic venue managed by Another Planet Entertainment since 2010. Built in 1915 for the Pan Pacific Exhibition, this venue hosts diverse events from high school graduations to rock concerts, serving as a vibrant hub for the community.

The Need for Modernization

When Another Planet Entertainment took over, it became clear that the elevators were in a dire state. The control room was filled with outdated technology from 1952, which had far outlived its usefulness. The Larkin Freight elevator, crucial for transporting high-profile guests like members of the Grateful Dead, President Obama, and the Dalai Lama, frequently broke down, causing significant disruptions on event days.

Partnership with Star Elevator

Upon partnering with Star Elevator, the modernization process kicked off with a detailed survey of the existing equipment. Our team worked closely with Another Planet Entertainment to ensure that the modernization aligned with the venue's needs while preserving its historical significance. We faced unique challenges, such as limited access to the machine room, which required precise coordination and the use of cranes for equipment installation.

Execution and Results

Our team executed the project meticulously, from ordering new equipment to supporting the crew on the ground. The project involved collaboration with Hatton Crane and SFMTA Muni to de-energize and move power lines for crane operations. Despite the logistical complexities, the project was a success, with the new elevators not only looking great but also providing reliable service.

Pride in Our Work

We are incredibly proud to have played a role in the ongoing history of the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Our work ensures that the elevators will reliably serve the venue for decades to come. We look forward to the next rock concert when we can proudly say, "We did that."

Our entire team at Star Elevator is excited to be part of this historic building's future. For more updates on our projects and innovations in elevator technology, stay tuned!
