Modernizing a Landmark: Star Elevator’s Project at the Oakland Tribune Tower

We're proud to announce that Star Elevator has been awarded the contract to modernize the elevators in the historic Oakland Tribune Tower. Owned by Harvest Properties, this iconic building has been undergoing extensive capital improvements, including seismic retrofitting and waterproofing.

A Historic Challenge

The Tribune Tower, built in 1906 with the tower added in 1923, required a comprehensive modernization of its elevator system. The elevators, last updated in the 1970s, needed significant upgrades to meet modern standards. After a detailed survey, we identified what could be retained and what needed replacing, addressing issues from wear and age to deferred maintenance.

Our Approach

We started by focusing on the freight elevator, replacing the machine and cab shell, which involved precise coordination and a crane pick for new equipment. For the passenger elevators, we retained and refinished the original 100-year-old machines, preserving the building's historical integrity.

Expertise in Action

Our team, from front office staff to mechanics and senior leadership, worked tirelessly to ensure the project's success. With over 35 years of experience, we have a track record of excellence, including winning Elevator World's Project of the Year Award for our work on the Metropolis Trust Building in San Francisco.

Pride in Preservation

We are excited to contribute to the revitalization of the Oakland Tribune Tower, turning it into a modern, creative office space while honoring its historic significance. Our dedication to quality and customer satisfaction drives every project we undertake, making us a trusted partner in preserving and modernizing landmark buildings.
